As early as Saturday, US President Donald Trump threatened to levy tariffs on Mexico and Canada, its neighbors.
Ottawa: According to The Globe and Mail, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau stated that Canada would respond in a “forceful but reasonable” manner if the US decides to levy the 25% tariffs that President Donald Trump has promised.
As early as Saturday, President Donald Trump threatened to levy tariffs on Mexico and Canada, its neighbors.
Speaking to reporters ahead of a meeting with his advisory council on Canada-U.S. relations on Friday, Trudeau stated, “Should the president decide to impose tariffs on Canada, we are prepared to respond swiftly — with a measured, firm, and proportionate reaction,” as reported by The Globe and Mail.
On Thursday, Trump reaffirmed his warnings, stating that he has not yet decided whether Canadian oil will be subject to the impending tariffs.
Trudeau stated that the tariffs will harm the US economy and jeopardize the two countries’ national security in addition to harming Canada.
The Globe and Mail reported that Trudeau added that Canada would continue to argue that trade with Canada is beneficial for the long-term security and prosperity of the United States, citing Canada’s clean energy, steel and aluminum, critical minerals, and “stable democratic institutions, shared values, and the best workers in the world.”
“If tariffs are imposed on Canada, we will respond decisively.” “Until tariffs are lifted and, of course, everything is on the table, we will not give up,” Trudeau declared.
The Hill claims that Trump is still determined to put tariffs on Canada and Mexico, pointing to the US trade imbalance.
“There are several reasons why we will be announcing the tariffs on Canada and Mexico. “I plan to impose a 25 percent tariff on Canada and Mexico, as it’s necessary due to the significant trade deficits we face with both nations,” Trump stated on Thursday.
