Kolkata Knight Riders head coach Chandrakant Pandit on Sunday subtly endorsed the idea of IPL franchises having more influence over pitch conditions at their home grounds, acknowledging that teams naturally expect favorable surfaces.

His comments come after KKR captain Ajinkya Rahane recently expressed a desire for spin-friendly tracks at Eden Gardens to suit their bowling attack.

“As a coach and team management, we play on whatever surface is provided. Ultimately, the curator has control over it,” Pandit said ahead of KKR’s clash against Mumbai Indians.

While careful not to overstep, the seasoned coach admitted that every team, including KKR, would prefer pitches that complement their strengths.

“Right now, my focus is solely on tomorrow’s crucial game. I’m not dwelling on who controls what. But naturally, as a team, we do have certain expectations from our home venue,” he added with a smile.

When asked if franchises should get more favorable pitches for their seven home games, Pandit responded with a chuckle, “Who wouldn’t want that? It’s a simple answer.”

Narine Fit for MI Clash

In a positive update, Pandit confirmed that star all-rounder Sunil Narine has fully recovered from his illness and will be available for the Mumbai Indians match.

“Sunil is 100% fit. He’s been training since yesterday and is in good shape,” the coach assured.

KKR Eyeing MI’s Struggles

With Mumbai Indians losing both their opening IPL 2024 matches, Pandit sees an opportunity to pile further pressure on the five-time champions.

“We’re focusing on continuing our momentum from the last game. MI’s current form gives us an added advantage, but we must adapt quickly to Mumbai’s conditions,” he said, emphasizing the need for quick adjustment at Wankhede.

The tactician’s measured remarks highlight the delicate balance between respecting pitch curators’ autonomy and teams’ desire for home advantage—a debate that continues to simmer in IPL circles.
