A tragic derailment of the Bengaluru-Kamakhya Superfast Express near Nergundi station in Odisha’s Cuttack on Sunday has claimed one life and left multiple passengers injured. The incident, involving 11 coaches, occurred on the busy Howrah-Chennai route, disrupting rail traffic.
- Casualties: A passenger from Alipurduar, West Bengal, lost his life, while eight others were admitted to SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack. Several more received first aid at the site.
- Rescue & Restoration: Odisha Fire Services confirmed the completion of rescue operations. Efforts are underway to clear the tracks and restore normal services at the earliest.
- Official Response: Odisha CM Mohan Charan Majhi assured prompt assistance, stating, “Authorities are on-site, ensuring aid and working to resume operations quickly. The state will cover medical expenses for the injured.”
- Helplines & Diversions: Railways activated emergency helplines and diverted three trains—Dhauli, Neelachal, and Purulia Expresses. A special train has been arranged for stranded passengers.
Investigation Launched
The East Coast Railway (ECoR) announced that the Commission of Railway Safety (CRS) will conduct a detailed probe into the derailment. “Safety protocols were followed during rescue ops. Normalcy will be restored ASAP,” ECoR stated on X.
