The Supreme Court has strongly criticized comedian Samay Raina for making an insensitive joke about individuals with disabilities. A video featuring Raina and other celebrities allegedly mocking disabled people was presented before the court, sparking outrage.
The controversy stems from a joke Raina made during one of his stand-up comedy acts regarding Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA), a rare and life-threatening medical condition requiring a one-time gene therapy costing around ₹16 crore. Raina’s remarks were deemed offensive by the Cure SMA Foundation, which filed a petition in the Supreme Court seeking action against such jokes. The foundation also appealed for reducing the high prices of essential drugs, as most of India’s population cannot afford them.
Justice Suryakant expressed deep concern, stating, “We are really disturbed by the allegations. We want such instances on record.” The court has asked concerned parties to suggest measures before proceeding further.
