The “only problem” that President Donald Trump has with India, according to him, is that it is “one of the highest tariffing nations in the world.” He stated that he had a “very good relationship” with the country. Trump reaffirmed his pledge to begin enforcing reciprocal US tariffs on the nation on April 2.
Trump talked about the US relationship with India in an interview with the American news, opinion, and commentary website Breitbart News.
“I have a very good relationship with India, but the only problem I have with them is that they’re one of the highest tariffing nations in the world,” Trump remarked when asked about his meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi last month. We will be charging them the same tariffs they charge us on April 2, but I think they will likely be decreasing those prices significantly.
“We have a powerful group of partners in trade,” Trump added, referring to the India-Middle East-Europe-Economic Corridor (IMEC) as a “group of wonderful nations” together to “counter other countries that look to hurt us on trade.”
“Once more, we cannot allow those partners to treat us poorly, but to be honest, we perform better against our enemies than against our friends in many respects. In certain instances, those who would not be as nice to us treat us better than those who are meant to be friendly, such as the European Union, which treats us horribly when it comes to trade. The US president declared, “India and everyone would think of them as an ally.”
“For others, I can say the same thing. However, our coalition of amazing countries is fighting back against those that try to harm us in trade,” he continued.
Trump has frequently blasted India’s hefty tariffs. He reaffirmed that reciprocal tariffs on nations that apply levies on American goods will begin on April 2 and described India as a country with extremely high tariffs.
Trump has referred to India as a “big abuser” and “tariff king” in the past.
Trump claimed that India has “been very strong on tariffs” during a joint news conference with Prime Minister Narendra Modi last month in the White House. He added, “I don’t blame them, necessarily, but it’s a different way of doing business.” India has very high taxes and trade restrictions, making it extremely difficult to sell there. On March 10, Commerce Secretary Sunil Barthwal informed a parliamentary panel in New Delhi that talks between the US and India are still ongoing and that no trade tariff agreement has been achieved thus far.
India’s high tariffs have been criticised by Trump.
Under a bilateral trade agreement, India has stated that it was considering strengthening its commercial relations with the US, particularly by lowering tariff and non-tariff trade barriers.
