Sony is commemorating the 20th anniversary of God of War with treasures from your dusty old record player, a LA art studio, and digital Norse legendary worlds. Kratos’ incredibly fierce Dark Odyssey skin (above) is the focal point. All you need to do in 2025 is own a meagre copy of God of War: Ragnarök, but in God of War II, obtaining that game’s version took hours of torturous gameplay on the most harsh mode of the 2007 sequel.
On March 20, all gamers of God of War: Ragnarök on PC and PlayStation will receive a free upgrade for the Dark Odyssey collection. In addition to Dark Odyssey-themed armour, weapons, shields, and other items for the Ghost of Sparta, Atreus, and Freya, you also gain Kratos’ eerie black and gold appearance (above), which used to require defeating God of War II on God Mode difficulty—that is, the extremely difficult one.
The Dark Odyssey weapon skins are only available for the fully improved versions of each weapon, which may disappoint you if you haven’t spent enough time playing the game to fully utilise all of your weapons. However, Santa Monica Studio is at least introducing the option to modify the shield rönd and weapon attachments’ looks.
You may get Kratos’ most fierce throwback skins as part of God of War’s 20th anniversary celebration.
A tonne of merchandise is also being offered as part of the 20th anniversary celebration. These include a new set of art prints (like the one above by Ollie Hoff), a two-volume retrospective book set that covers the franchise’s development since 2005 and a 13-LP soundtrack set showcasing Kratos’ two decades of immortal skull-bashing. (The Greek trilogy games’ double LP soundtracks will also be available for purchase for the first time.)
But the 67-inch Jörmungandr shown below is a must-have for any God of War collection. It has a magnetised tongue to hold a detachable Leviathan Axe, which is a wonderful touch. (We’ll presume that Kratos had a slithery end in this universe as there isn’t a companion Kratos plush.)
The God of War exhibit at Gallery Nucleus in Los Angeles is worth seeing if you reside in Southern California. It features concept art, new artwork inspired by the franchise, and “unique memorabilia.” The dates are March 15–23.
Lastly, you can check out the games for less if you’re interested in the brand but don’t own them all. His final three adventures, God of War Ragnarök, God of War (2018), and God of War III Remastered, are available to PlayStation Plus Premium and Extra members. Additionally, PC players can purchase God of War (2018) and God of War Ragnarök on Steam for a discounted price of $20 and $48, respectively.
