India defeated Bangladesh by six wickets in their Group A Champions Trophy match in Dubai, headed by Shubman Gill, who hammered an undefeated century.

India’s pursuit of 229 was fuelled by the ICC no. 1 ranked batter smashing his second consecutive century.

The Indian opener scored 101* off 129 deliveries, continuing his impressive run of form. Prior to Thursday’s match, Gill and Rohit Sharma were at the top of the ICC Men’s Batting Rankings, and they worked together to target the Bangladesh bowlers right away.

With seven boundaries in his 41-run innings, the Indian captain appeared to be in excellent form with the bat. However, Taskin Ahmed’s brief delivery off the penultimate ball of the powerplay undid Rohit.

After India got off to a fast start, Bangladesh’s leg-spinner Rishad Hossain then struck twice to dismiss Axar Patel (8) and Virat Kohli (22) to ignite a comeback from his team.

After dropping four wickets, Gill and KL Rahul (41*) put up an important 87-run partnership to win the match.

Experienced pacer Mohammed Shami made a spectacular comeback to the big stage by taking five wickets to put India on the attack in the first innings of the match.

Ending the first innings with bowling numbers of 5/53 from his 10-over quota, Shami exceeded Zaheer Khan to become India’s top wicket-taker at ICC ODI tournaments and reached the 200 ODI wickets milestone.

In his first delivery, the new-ball specialist got rid of Soumya Sarkar and Mehidy Hasan Miraz, both of whom produced outside edges that were collected in the slips by wicketkeeper KL Rahul and Shubman Gill, respectively.

Bangladesh leaps back thanks to Tawhid’s tonne:

In his debut ICC competition for India, Harshit Rana bowled from the other end, dismissing Bangladesh captain Nazmul Hossain Shanto to give India two wickets in as many overs.

After that, KL Rahul grabbed the catches behind the stumps, and Axar Patel chimed in, taking the wickets of Tanzid Hasan and Mushfiqur Rahim off consecutive deliveries.

Jaker Ali edged one behind to give the left-arm orthodox a hat-trick, but Indian captain Rohit Sharma failed to catch the ball behind the stumps.

Tawhid Hridoy and Jaker Ali added 154 runs for the sixth wicket as Indian spinners tightened their grip.

Axar Patel almost wraps a hat-trick:

In the history of the ICC Champions Trophy and in the ODI format versus India, the partnership was the highest ever for the sixth wicket.

As Bangladesh made a recovery to surpass the 200-run milestone, Tawhid kept the scoreboard moving from the other end as Shami dismissed Jaker Ali for 68. Rishad Hossain also contributed vital runs further down the order.

In order to end the innings for India, Shami caught Tawhid Hridoy off a delivery from Harshit Rana, putting him back in the mix.

Mohammed Shami’s inspirational comeback journey for India:

With two points from the victory, India moves up to second place in Group A, matching New Zealand, who lead the points table and have a higher run rate.

In their upcoming match, Rohit Sharma and company will play Pakistan in Dubai on Sunday. In contrast, Bangladesh will face New Zealand in Rawalpindi the following week.
