KASHMIR: 31 january 2025- The higher altitudes of the Kashmir Valley saw a fresh layer of light snowfall, accompanied by rainfall in parts of the plains on Friday, according to officials.
The popular tourist destinations of Gulmarg, Pahalgam, and Sonmarg experienced light snowfall overnight, according to the Meteorological Centre in Srinagar.
Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir, along with a few other areas in the valley, recorded light rainfall on Friday.
Dr. Mukhtar Ahmad, Director of the Meteorological Department, stated that there is a possibility of light snowfall in the higher reaches, with some plains also likely to witness light snowfall accompanied by rain in the next 24 hours.
He mentioned that parts of south Kashmir might also witness rain and snowfall during this period.
From the evening of February 3, isolated areas are likely to receive light snowfall and rain. On February 4, the weather is expected to remain generally cloudy, with chances of light to moderate rain and snow in many parts of Jammu and Kashmir.
Another spell of light rain or snowfall is possible at scattered locations during the early morning or forenoon hours of February 5.
Meanwhile, except for Gulmarg, night temperatures rose at most weather stations across the valley following the overnight snowfall in the higher reaches of Kashmir.
The minimum temperature in Srinagar during the intervening night of Thursday and Friday was recorded at 0.1°C, which is 0.7°C above the average for the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir.
In north Kashmir’s Baramulla district, the ski resort of Gulmarg registered a low of -6°C, 1.4°C higher than the usual average for this time of year. Meanwhile, the tourist destination of Pahalgam recorded a minimum temperature of -1.7°C.
Srinagar’s day temperature on Friday was recorded at 11.7°C.
