GURDASPUR, PUNJAB: In a significant victory against cross-border smuggling, the Border Security Force (BSF) apprehended two Indian smugglers and seized a consignment of heroin in Gurdaspur district, Punjab, on Sunday.

The BSF confirmed the arrest, stating that the operation followed credible intelligence regarding drone activity in the area. Acting swiftly, BSF troops launched a search operation, leading to the successful capture of the smugglers and the recovery of the drugs.

“At approximately 5:15 PM, during the operation, two suspects were apprehended along with a packet believed to contain heroin, weighing 550 grams. In addition, two mobile phones and a Hero Splendor motorcycle were seized. A metal hook attached to the packet suggests a possible case of drone dropping,” the BSF stated in a report.

The operation took place near Village Chanduwadala in Gurdaspur district, and the arrested individuals are residents of the same village.

According to the BSF, this successful interception highlights their professionalism, vigilance, and unwavering dedication to securing the nation’s borders and combating cross-border smuggling.

On Saturday, the BSF’s Tripura Frontier apprehended 14 Bangladeshi nationals and two Indian touts involved in illegal activities along the India-Bangladesh border. Additionally, the BSF seized a significant quantity of narcotics, sugar, cattle, and other contraband items, valued at around Rs 2.5 crore.

In a demonstration of strong bilateral cooperation, the BSF has maintained robust coordination with the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB). This partnership has included around 80 coordinated patrols and numerous border coordination meetings at various levels to enhance security and improve intelligence-sharing.

The BSF has also engaged with local communities through over 40 village coordination meetings in border areas, addressing residents’ concerns and promoting awareness of border security protocols. These efforts aim to build trust and foster cooperation between security forces and the local population.

In the fight against drug trafficking, the BSF, alongside other agencies, carried out a major Ganja destruction drive in remote areas, resulting in the destruction of over 1 lakh mature cannabis plants cultivated illegally across approximately 60 acres. This initiative is part of the BSF’s ongoing mission to support a “Drug-Free Society.”
