One day after departing for Nome and never showing up, a plane carrying ten people was discovered crashed in Alaska on Friday, according to the Coast Guard. It is thought that there are no survivors.
According to the maritime military division, three persons were discovered dead inside the plane after its wreckage was discovered about 34 miles southeast of Nome.
According to the Coast Guard, the seven additional passengers “are presumed to be inside the aircraft, which was inaccessible due to the severe damage to the plane.”
“The Coast Guard assessed that the extent of the wreckage made survival impossible,” the statement further noted..
According to officials, the Bering Air Cessna Caravan departed Unalakleet, which is located on the east shore of Norton Sound in western Alaska, on Thursday and was travelling approximately 140 miles to Nome.
One pilot and nine passengers were on board.
At 2:37 p.m. on Thursday, Bering Air Director of Operations David Olson told Anchorage’s NBC affiliate KTUU that the flight departed Unalakleet.
At a news briefing early Friday, Coast Guard Lt. Cmdr. Benjamin McIntyre-Coble stated that radar data indicated that at approximately 3:18 p.m. On Thursday, “the aircraft encountered an incident that led to a sudden and sharp decline in both altitude and speed.”

Two Coast Guard swimmers were lowered by helicopter after the wreckage was discovered on Friday, and they discovered the three deceased individuals in the forward section of the aircraft, according to the Coast Guard.
“Heartfelt condolences are with those affected by this tragic incident,” the Coast Guard wrote in a post on X.
Governor Mike Dunleavy of Alaska and his wife, Rose, expressed their “heartbreak by the loss of the 10 people on the Bering Air flight” on Friday.
Dunleavy released a statement saying, “Our prayers are with the families, friends, and communities mourning this tragedy.”
With help from the Alaska National Guard, the Nome Volunteer Fire Department said that its search and rescue team was stepping up for the recovery mission.
The National Transportation Safety Board announced the formation of a team to look into the collision.
Since the state’s highway system does not connect Nome and Unalakleet, the primary modes of transportation between the two are air, water, snowmobiles, and trails.
The Republican senator from Alaska, Lisa Murkowski, stated on Friday that “my heart is broken over the news out of Nome.”
